Filipino martial arts isn’t as widely known, but that could be changing

Gregory Manalo was in the midst of a personal renaissance in the late 1990s when he discovered Filipino martial arts (FMA).

“I didn’t find eskrima,” he told NBC Asian America, referring to a style of Filipino martial arts. “Eskrima found me.”

For Manalo, who has been training in FMA for about 25 years and teaches it in the San Francisco Bay Area, FMA was an entry point into learning more about his identity as a Filipino American that allowed him to tap into his culture and ancestry. Monroe artist among first annual City of Detroit arts and culture honorees

"Land of the Lotus Eaters" was a more famous painting by Robert Duncanson.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan commemorated International Artist Day this week with an announcement of the inaugural Detroit ACE Honors, which salute achievement by artists and arts patrons who have contributed more than 25 years of service to the Detroit arts and culture scene.

Monroe artist Robert S. Duncanson made the list.

A ceremony, to be held in January, will present each honoree with a Detroit ACE medal of excellence. The event will also unveil the members of the Detroit Council of the Arts, who will choose recipients in subsequent years.

Terrebonne Fine Arts Guild on upcoming Christmas show after Ida

Like much of the community, the Terrebonne Fine Arts Guild suffered a one-two punch from the COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Ida. 

The guild was organized in 1963 to promote art and art culture in Terrebonne Parish and is located at 630 Belanger Street in Houma. Since then, it has provided artists in the area a space to come together, as well as something that reflects the bayou community, according to the guild’s president, Margaret Chouest.
