Artist Jake Sheiner’s recent performs depict scenes of suburban isolation, set in opposition to the backdrop of his dwelling city of Los Angeles. Intimate in size, the acrylic paintings examine liminal spaces — landscapes existing at the changeover between two other spots or states of becoming. “I am interested in how these peaceful spaces can be perceived as deserted, or frozen in time, and how this a little unsettling experience is also acquainted in our minds,” he describes. “I think this nostalgia for a spot the viewer feels a link to, but has hardly ever been, is partly owing to the ubiquitousness of the LA landscape in pop lifestyle.”

Sheiner’s paintings are a visible diary of types, reflecting his everyday living in Los Angeles by capturing scenes he has bodily encountered, possibly by probability or deliberately. “They are both voyeuristic and autobiographical in mother nature,” he says. “Much like the methods of Edward Hopper, Fairfield Porter, David Hockney, or Lois Dodd, I am regularly browsing for moments deserving of investigation by the act of portray.
