Actress Richa Chadha, who has worked in both film industries over the years, shared her thoughts about what could be the reason behind the Hindi box office being left in the doldrums. Sharing her reasons why the South film industry is seeing more hits than misses, she tells indianexpress.com, “They’ve got their math right in terms of numbers and ticket prices.”
Taking the superhit Vijay starrer ‘Master’ as her reference, she says, dedicated fan clubs of the megastar venture out to watch the film. “Unlike the Hindi film industry and its greedy film distributors, there they keep the ticket at Rs 100-400 even if it’s a hit,” she says.
However, she notes that in Bollywood, as tickets are priced above Rs 400, “footfall will decrease.”
She went on to say that the problem lies with the distribution of films. While reiterating the need to control theatre ticket prices, she said, “Recently, a film was released which I’m sure will come on OTT soon, its leads had their noses up in the air. And when the collection on first day came, it was less than one-third of what the hero charges.”
Richa also said that in order for cinema to survive, ‘bigger stakeholders’ need to take the onus.
Over the past months, several south films like ‘Pushpa’, ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ have been raking in the big bucks at the box office. The Ranveer Singh starrer ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’ that is set for its release tomorrow is reportedly expecting an average collections, unless it picks up over the weekend.
Reports on boxofficeindia.com, now claim that all eyes are turned to the Kartik Aaryan starrer ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ to see if the Hindi film industry can get back to its pre-covid collections.
Films like Tiger Shoff’s ‘Heropanti 2’, Ajay Devgn’s ‘Runway 34’, and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Bachchhan Paandey’ failed to hit the mark at the ticket windows over the past months. However, the same could not be said for the south film releases that went on to hit the 1000 crore mark at the box office.
