Plumbing issues in a home can range from minor annoyances like a dripping faucet to major failures in the drainage or water supply systems. Regardless of the severity of the problem, it’s important to address plumbing issues promptly to prevent further damage and bigger repairs down the road. While some minor plumbing tasks can be DIY projects, most repairs or installation projects require the expertise of a professional plumbing contractor. This article outlines the top considerations to keep in mind when selecting a residential plumbing contractor.
1 – Check Plumbing Contractor References and Reviews
Ask a potential plumbing contractor for a reference from previous residential clients and thoroughly check those references. Talk to past clients about their experience working with that plumber to see if they were reliable, knowledgeable, priced projects fairly, and provided good customer service. You can also check reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and HomeAdvisor to see what other customers have said about their experience. Look for plumbers that consistently receive positive reviews and feedback praising their service.
2 – Verify Licensing and Insurance
A licensed and insured plumbing contractor provides important protection. All plumbing work must be performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes. Unlicensed plumbers may not pull proper permits or do subpar work that could cause bigger issues. Reputable plumbing contractors will have the proper state and local licenses displayed on their website or available upon request. They should also carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation to cover any property damage, injuries, or accidents that occur on the job.
3 – Estimates and Contracts
Get multiple estimates in writing from potential plumbing contractors for whatever project you need to do before making a hiring decision. An estimate should include a full breakdown of parts, materials, and labor costs so there are no surprises. Insist on a fixed-price estimate to avoid high invoices from a contractor that may try to add additional charges once work begins. Reputable companies stand behind their estimates. Make sure any estimate includes guarantees on labor and installation.
4 – Specialized with Plumbing Experience and Certifications
Consider a plumbing contractor’s specific expertise and certifications when choosing one for your needs. Is the project a new installation, such as adding additional bathrooms, or repairs on an existing system? Contractors that specialize in the type of work required for your project will likely do a better and more efficient job. Specialized training ensures code compliance and quality work. Bigger plumbing issues require a Master Plumber with extensive experience.
5 – Communication and Customer Service
The best plumbing contractors provide prompt, clear communication and great customer service. They should be available to discuss project details, answer questions, and address any concerns. Get a sense during initial interactions if the plumber is responsive, listens well, and explains things understandably. Make sure they provide you with projected timelines, updates during the job, and next steps at completion. Reputable plumbers want clients to feel informed and comfortable throughout the process.
Conclusion
Thoroughly selecting a few highly qualified plumbing contractors based on the factors above provides peace of mind when making your hiring decision for any plumbing job. While DIY projects are an option, let the experts handle major plumbing issues or installations to avoid costly mistakes or future problems. Taking the time upfront to find a licensed, experienced plumbing contractor you feel comfortable with will result in a smoother, more satisfactory outcome for any plumbing repairs or projects around your home.
