Baltimore’s Summer Arts and Learning Academy is helping kids in the classroom, and gaining notice

BALTIMORE — Baltimore City’s Summertime Arts and Mastering Academy has caught the interest of educators in other states.

Educating fellows from South Carolina are in town this 7 days observing the plan so they can replicate it there.

About the 6-week program, about 3,000 learners in Pre-K by means of 6th grade discover via arts-integrated systems, such as producing songs about math or painting a tale they are examining.

“It really is practically like hiding the veggies in the sauce. The little ones never realize what they are having,” said Laurie Sutton of Baltimore Metropolis General public Colleges. “But they are acquiring it in large doses.”

About 20 educating fellows with Furman University are attempting to master the recipe for that sauce.

This is Dawn Johnson’s 13th summer time teaching the Summer time Arts and Studying Academy, or SALA.

Eric Gabriel, a teaching artist with the academy, claimed seeing young ones excited to find out via art manufactured his working day.

Amid ongoing criticism of Baltimore Metropolis Community Educational facilities, administrators say this proves the technique is executing something appropriate.
